Leo Varadkar has 'no advice' for Boris Johnson over Christmas party controversy

Tanáiste Leo Varadkar has said he has “no advice” to offer British Prime Minister Boris Johnson over reports that a Christmas bash took place at Downing Street.

Boris Johnson has “apologised unreservedly” after footage emerged of senior Number 10 officials joking and laughing about a Downing Street Christmas party last year.

But he has denied all responsibility and told MPs he has been "repeatedly assured" no such gathering took place.

Leo Varadkar also said he is not aware of any Christmas parties organised for Government members here.

When asked about the bash, speaking to reporters in Drogheda on Wednesday, Mr Varadkar said: “I have no advice for Prime Minister Johnson in respect of those matters.

“I don’t want to comment on them at all.”

The Fine Gael leader also said he is not aware of any Christmas parties organised for Government members here.

He said: “I’m not aware of any Christmas parties organised unfortunately this year.

“Looks like it’s going to be another year without Christmas parties, that’s sad but unfortunately that’s the way it has to be.”

When asked if Mr Johnson was an honest man to deal with, the Tanáiste said: “In my dealings with him what he said to me, stood.

“He didn’t break his word to me.

“But I am aware that other people have had a different experience.”

Speaking this morning, Boris Johnson said he was "furious" and had asked the Cabinet Secretary to investigate the reports of the Christmas party at a time when the UK was in strict lockdown.
