Leo Varadkar General Election posters covered in Batman masks in Drogheda, Co Louth

With Fine Gael might struggling to get their election campaign back on track the party might need the help of a superhero.

And some joker has gone to extraordinary has gone to great lengths to ensure the Caped Crusader comes to the party’s rescue.

Posters of Leo Varadkar done up as the Dark Knight himself have been appearing around Drogheda over the weekend and no one knows who is involved.

Local people have taken to Facebook and Twitter to upload photos of the defaced posters on lampposts around the country’s largest town.

One Facebook user said: “Robin would have been more appropriate... Fine Gael have been robbing us all for the last 9 years.”

It is estimated that dozens of Fine Gael posters have been altered to with the outgoing Taoiseach’s face covered with a Batman mask that has been stapled on.

On the Dublin Road alone there are five posters showing Mr Varadkar mocked up as the Dark Knight while there are at lest three on the Rathmullen Road.

Whoever is behind the prank has gone to considerable trouble and would have needed a ladder and an industrial stapler to attach the masks.
