Leo Varadkar facing pressure from Fine Gael colleagues after huge drop in support in new poll

Leo Varadkar is facing pressure from some of his Fine Gael party colleagues after public support for the party, the Government as a whole and the Tánaiste himself plummeted in a new poll.

The results of an Irish Times/IPSOS poll which was published on Wednesday night saw Sinn Fein extend their lead as Ireland's most popular party to 10 points.

Fine Gael's support dropped five points in the poll, from 27% to 22%.

The overall support for the Government fell seven points from 53% to 46%.

But the biggest alarm bell for Mr Varadkar will be the public's opinion when it comes to how satisfied they are with him.

Mr Varadkar dropped an astonishing 13 points, from 56% to 43%, with the Taoiseach Micheál Martin also falling by eight points to 41%.

Fine Gael has been caught up in a number of controversies this summer, mainly the Katherine Zappone saga.

Her cancelled appointment to a UN Special Envoy led to a vote of no confidence in Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney, which he survived.

On top of that, there was the Merrion Hotel party which saw Mr Varadkar in attendance.

And at a Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting on Wednesday night, Mr Varadkar faced some criticism from his colleagues.

This was mainly aimed at a number of promises that had been made about Budget 2022 which the party may not have followed through on.

The Irish Examiner report that Cork North-West TD Michael Creed, a former agriculture minister, and former justice minister Charlie Flanagan raised the issue with Mr Varadkar.

Some described the meeting as "bad-tempered" but other senior sources told the publication that it was "more robust than niggly"
