Leo Varadkar asks Senator Paddy Burke to give up €9,500 Oireachtas gig for attending golf-gate dinner

Leo Varadkar has asked Fine Gael Senator Paddy Burke to step down from a €9,500 Oireachtas gig after he attended the controversial Galway golf-gate event.

Mr Burke is a member of the Oireachtas Commission, which oversees the running of the Dáil and Seanad.

He attended the controversial Oireachtas golf event in Clifden, Co Galway last week.

Mr Varadkar had already removed the party whip from Senator Burke -  a Mayo politician.

But sources within Mr Burke’s own party were angry that Mr Burke’s punishment was too light and believed he should have been made an example of.

This afternoon, a Fine Gael spokeswoman confirmed to the Irish Mirror that the Tánaiste has asked Mr Burke to step down from the cushy number.

Earlier today People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett told the Irish Mirror that Mr Burke should resign his position on the Oireachtas Commission.

He said: “There has to be serious sanction for people who were involved in such a flagrant breach of public health guidelines.

“I think people will not be satisfied until there’s real sanction for people.

“Removing the party whip virtually means nothing, it’s a meaningless tokenism gesture and people would expect there would be real sanction.

“I think people expect that sort of sanction, that they suffer some sort of penalty.”

The Irish Mirror has contacted Senator Paddy Burke for comment.
