Leo Varadkar accused of 'hiding' from questions over controversial appearance at Katherine Zappone party

David Cullinane has called on Leo Varadkar to “come out of hiding” to answer questions over his attendance at Katherine Zappone’s party in the Merrion Hotel last month.

The Sinn Féin frontbench TD also said that the latest scandal involving the Tánaiste is yet another indicator that a General Election should be called.

Mr Cullinane said that Mr Varadkar, who has admitted attending Ms Zappone’s garden party on July 21st, has further questions to answer.

He said: “I want to hear from him (Varadkar) in relation to his account of what happened over the last week, we haven’t heard from the Tánaiste.”

Mr Varadkar did release a statement confirming he was at the party for a brief time.

Mr Cullinane continued: “Mr Varadkar normally has plenty to say, he’s not shy of offering an opinion and yet he has now gone to ground and he is now in hiding and he has to come out of hiding.”

Sinn Féin also believes the incident should trigger a general election.

He added: “I believe that we need a change of government and a change of government can only come about if we have a general election.

“But if we go back to this story again, this is not the first time the Government and Leo Varadkar have been bogged down in this type of controversy of doing favours for friends.”

It is understood Mr Cullinane is referring here to the major political controversy broken by the Irish Mirror earlier this year where we revealed details of the criminal investigation launched by gardaí into Mr Varadkar’s leaking of a confidential government contract to a friend.
