Lenton and Dunkirk Covid rates increase by 104%

The Lenton and Dunkirk areas of Nottingham have been revealed as the places with the highest increase of Covid cases.

Up to and including July 31, the areas had a 109.4 per cent increase in cases, according to the latest government data.

Neighbouring area The Meadows saw a decrease of 62.5% and cases decreasing by 30.

Isaiah Choy, 22, is self-isolating on Lenton Boulevard after a positive test result.

He said: "I know a lot of people that have Covid right now.

"At least seven or eight of my friends.

"I think the increase is because of people going out and about without restrictions, so going clubbing."

The international student has had his first jab and is having to wait four weeks for his second.

He added: "I couldn't go home so I've had to pay an extra £800 in for rent here.

"Luckily, my quarantine finishes tomorrow."

Other residents think cases have risen in the ward due to students.

Zhenyu Wang, 30, of Ashburnham Avenue, said: "I would say I agree with it being because of students.

"As far as I know, no-one around me has had Covid.

"I've never got it and I'm waiting on my second jab now."

Some residents have blamed the lifting of restrictions for the rise in cases.

Peter Cooney, 19, a student at Nottingham Trent University said: "I think I got Covid when I went to Rock City.

"Everyone is close together.

"I think restrictions being lifted is the reason, as most people going out are students.

"But students only have the first dose due to the priority list."

Peter recently contracted Covid whilst out last week.

Three of his friends tested positive too, whilst his double-jabbed friend was the only negative.

Peter added: "Being double jabbed definitely offers more protection, I would say.

"I only got my first jab back in June."

Medical student Isbah Akhtar, 22, of Cottesmore Road was double vaccinated back in January.

She said: "I contracted Covid last October and our whole street had it.

"The increase is definitely because of restrictions lifting.

"It's strange how much it has increased but so many young people just aren't getting the vaccine."

Details of all vaccination and testing sites across Nottinghamshire can be found on the CCG website.
