Lenskart Controversy Sparks Debate Over Workplace Policies and Religious Expression

What Triggered the Controversy

The issue began when a document, reportedly outlining Lenskart’s staff grooming and uniform guidelines, went viral online. According to the circulated version, employees were permitted to wear certain religious items such as a black hijab and black turbans during work hours.

However, the same document appeared to restrict other forms of religious expression. It stated that “religious tikka/tilak and bindi/sticker is not allowed.” Additionally, it imposed limitations on chooda (wedding bangles traditionally worn by North Indian Hindu women), allowing them only for a period of three months from the date of marriage, subject to managerial approval.

This apparent inconsistency in the treatment of different religious symbols led to criticism and sparked a broader debate on fairness and inclusivity in workplace policies.

Why the Issue Gained Attention

The controversy quickly gained traction due to its connection with religious identity and everyday cultural practices. Many social media users pointed out that items like bindi and tilak are commonly worn and hold cultural as well as religious significance.

The perceived imbalance in the guidelines prompted discussions about whether workplace rules were being applied equitably across different communities, turning the issue into a larger conversation about corporate responsibility and inclusivity.

Founder Peyush Bansal Responds

Amid growing criticism, Peyush Bansal addressed the situation publicly on X (formerly Twitter). He clarified that the document being circulated was outdated and did not reflect the company’s current policies.

“Our policy has no restrictions on any form of religious expression, including bindi and tilak,” Bansal stated, adding that the company regularly reviews and updates its guidelines.

He also acknowledged the confusion caused by the viral document, saying that older versions of policies may not represent the company’s present stance. Bansal issued an apology for the concern and misunderstanding among employees and the public.

Continued Questions from Users

Despite the clarification, skepticism remains among some users. Several individuals questioned the authenticity of the explanation, claiming that the document appeared to be recent and not outdated.

Some users have called on the company to publicly release its current policy for transparency. Others, including public commentators, have asked why such “religious asymmetry” would have been acceptable even in earlier versions of the guidelines.

Ongoing Debate

The controversy continues to fuel discussions online, highlighting the sensitivity of workplace policies when they intersect with cultural and religious practices. While the company has issued a clarification, many users are still seeking clearer communication and documented proof of the current rules.

The incident underscores the importance of transparency and consistency in corporate policies, especially in diverse societies where personal identity and workplace norms often overlap.
