Lenadoon house fire claims the life of man in his 80s

An elderly man has died after a house fire in West Belfast on Wednesday.

Police confirmed that the man, aged in his 80s, died after the blaze at a property in Lenadoon Avenue this morning. His death is not being treated as suspicious at this time.

The NI Fire and Rescue Service and NI Ambulance Service also attended the scene.

In a statement, a PSNI spokesperson said: “Police can confirm that a man in his 80s has died following a fire at a property in the Lenadoon Avenue area of Belfast on Wednesday morning, September 21.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage."

NIAS received a 999 call at 8:01am, a spokesperson confirmed.

"The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 08:01 on Wednesday 21 September following reports of an incident on the Lenadoon Avenue, Belfast," they added.

"NIAS despatched 1 Emergency crew to the incident. No one was taken from scene."

Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) Group Commander Geoff Somerville said: “The thoughts and sympathies of Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service are with the loved ones of a man who died following a fire on Lenadoon Avenue, Belfast.

"On Wednesday 21 September at 8.04am, Firefighters were called to reports of a fire in a 2 storey terraced house. 2 Fire Appliances from Springfield Fire Station attended the incident. The fire was out when Firefighters arrived, but tragically a man was found dead at the scene.

"The incident was dealt with by 9.59am and the cause of the fire is under investigation."
