Lenadoon flats pulled down ahead of 23 homes being built

A new generation of families will start to “create their own memories” in a corner of West Belfast after well known flats were demolished to pave the way for a new development.

The final phase of demolition at the Corrib Avenue flats in Lenadoon took place on Saturday with diggers pulling down old walls ahead of 23 new homes being built.

The old flats, which had become rundown, are to be replaced by 12 houses, ten apartments and a bungalow for a tenant with complex needs. Choice Housing, the social housing association behind the plans, says they are “extremely eager” to see contractors on-site to by March 2023 with a construction programme of 18 months.

Sinn Féin councillor in the area Arder Carson was on site for the demolition on Saturday.

He said: “The last block at Corrib Avenue gets the demolition treatment signalling the end of an era in this part of Lenadoon. These blocks have a lot of history associated with them and have created a lifetime of memories for residents who have past through them.

“Over recent years they fell into a bad state of disrepair and demolition was the resolution. A housing led regeneration project through Building Successful Communities was designed and is now at the point of delivery.

“A new generation of families will begin to write their own history and create their own memories as Lenadoon residents and we wish them all the best whoever they may be.

“A big thanks to all involved especially Upper Lenadoon Residents association and our Sinn Fein elected reps.”
