Lena Dunham has revealed she was briefly engaged following her split from Jack Antonoff.
In an interview with Cosmopolitan UK, the Girls creator discussed the aftermath of her break from the musician, who she dated for five years before parting ways in 2018.
Though Dunham did not confirm who she was engaged to, she said the man in question proposed with a shoelace from her boots and she said yes.
But she went on to explain the wedding never happened as Dunham realised she needed to take a romantic hiatus.
“I’d just had a hysterectomy, I’d broken up with my boyfriend, I was in the process of breaking up with my business partner - I had no business buying a pair of shoes, [let alone] getting engaged,” she said, “Then I just went, ‘You know what? I’ve been dating since I was 15 years old. I’m allowed to take a break.'”
The business partner in question is Jenni Konner, who was Dunham's co-showrunner and co-writer of HBO series Girls. The two also ran a production company and set up the now defunct feminist newsletter, Lenny Letter.
“It’s such a positive step for both of us" Konner told Variety of the split in 2018, "It’s almost like just moving to another chapter rather than being sad about it.”
Jack Antonoff is now dating model and artist Carlota Kohl. Dunham told the magazine the musician is still a "dear friend."
"The love you have for someone doesn't disappear because you don't have them; it's just logistically it doesn't work any more" she said, "I love him so much. He is a dear, dear friend of mine. Has it been easy every second? No, it's not easy to divide life with someone."
