Lena Dunham praises Instagram after leaving Twitter but admits getting trolled by 9-year-old girl

Lena Dunham has discussed her recent decision to leave Twitter due to being excessively trolled, adding that although she has found solace on the “less toxic” Instagram, she has been getting abuse from a 9-year-old girl.

Dunham was speaking at Vanity Fair’s New Establishment Summit, and said that though there were trolls on Instagram, too, she relished the opportunity to rat them out.

“I love reporting people. It’s my main source of power. There’s no reason I should be spending so much time reporting people except that it’s such a f*****g joy.”

She admitted, however, that not all of her trolls were giving her trouble.

A 9-year-old girl left a comment on one of Dunham’s posts calling her a “w***e”, although she misspelled the insult. Dunham said she ended up investigating and looking through the girl’s account, which featured a collection of videos of the girl doing fake British accents and eating chicken nuggets.

“If you’re a 9-year-old who has the wherewithal to find me and call me a w***e, I’m all about you,” she said.

The discussion, which included Instagram’s CEO Kevin Systrom, eventually turned to Instagram’s controversial policy to keep nipples - or female nipples, at least - off the app. Systrom admitted there had been “discussions” about an R-rated Instagram.

But Dunham, who has a well-documented nonchalant approach to appearing nude in her HBO show Girls, said she wasn’t constrained by the nudity policy.

“There are other things I’m worried about,” she said.
