Fans of Daniel Handler’s bestselling book franchise A Series of Unfortunate Events are so excited about Netflix’s upcoming original series adaptation that they made an unauthorised teaser trailer into a viral sensation.

The teaser, posted by the YouTube account of “Eleanora Poe” (a character from the novels) on Sunday, fooled the web before Netflix revealed to Variety that it’s not official. It has already amassed over 1m views.

The books were previously adapted into the 2004 film Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, starring Jim Carrey, Jude Law and Meryl Streep. To date, they have sold more than 65m copies worldwide.

The viral success of the fake trailer recalls the buzz drummed up by the fan-made trailer made for American Horror Story: Freak Show, which debuted this time last year and was swiftly removed from YouTube due to a copyright claim. Watch it on Vimeo below.

Netflix has yet to disclose a premiere date for the series.
