Lemington family's shock after their car was struck by suspected burglars making a getaway

A couple were left in shock after their car was struck by a vehicle being driven by suspected burglars - while their two young children were in the back.

Genna Bulley, 36, and Michael Wall, 35, were driving along Lemington Road, in Lemington, Newcastle, on Sunday, and were approaching a roundabout when a purple blue Honda hit the side of their car.

They say the Honda rammed them twice, causing significant damage. During this time, their children - Matthew, one, and Harry, six - were in the back seats and their car was hit on the side where Matthew was sitting.

The incident, which took place at around 4.15pm, was reported to the police and an investigation is now under way.

It is alleged the Honda was being driven by suspected burglars making a getaway after a break-in in West Denton.

Genna, a performance manager at Newcastle's RVI, of Lemington, said: "There was a car trying to get away from an incident somewhere and they were trying to get around other cars.

"We were in their way and the car rammed us twice to get past us. My one-year-old son was sat on the side that got rammed twice. They then undertook us to get round.

"They completely took the back of the car out and one of our back tyres burst.

"It was horrific. Matthew did not know what was happening but Harry was really quite distressed. He was saying 'my head mummy, my head'.

"It does not seem like they were hurt. However, my partner has pain down his neck and I have pain down the back."

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At about 4pm on Sunday, we received a report of a burglary at an address on The Burnside, West Denton.

"It was reported that a group of men had broken into a private garage and carried out an untidy search. A vehicle was then seen making off from the area.

"A short time later, at about 4.15pm, the vehicle was reported to have been involved in a collision in the Lemington Road area of Newcastle.

"It was reported that the car collided with another vehicle at a roundabout but did not stop at the scene and drove away.

"Thankfully nobody was injured but an investigation is ongoing into the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact us via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of our website or by calling 101 quoting log 602 061220."
