Leith history mural will come to life to mark 100 years of area merging with Edinburgh

The spectacular mural showing Leith's maritime history will come to life for one night only this weekend.

The Leith History Mural on North Junction Street will be illuminated by a special projection on Saturday, February 8.

It's part of the Leith 100 festival, which marks a century since the portside community formally merged with Edinburgh.

A piece of legislation in 1920 vastly expanded the city limits, bringing in areas like Corstorphine, Colinton, Cramond and Liberton into the capital city.

The merger was especially controversial in Leith, which voted against the move in a referendum.

Arts group LeithLate and Double Take Projections have organised the mural display, which runs between 7pm and 10pm.

Leith Late says: "Tim Chalk and Paul Grime’s mural created in 1986 depicts Leith's rich and varied social history. As part of this event Double Take Projections - the creative team behind Edinburgh's Castle's recent Castle of Light spectacular - will artistically re-imagine the mural through light projections using the artists' original artworks.

"Projections will run throughout the evening on a loop so come anytime between 7-10pm. Leith Theatre’s main auditorium will be open serving food and drink.

"Attendance is free and booking is not required. The mural is located on the corner of Ferry Road and North Junction Street, next to Leith Library and Leith Theatre."

At Leith Library, you will find a small pop-up exhibition on how the mural was made.
