Leith gin scoops top award at international spirits competition

A Leith gin distillery has been highly commended in a world renowned competition after its signature creation proved a hit with some of the planet’s top spirit experts.

The Electric Spirit Co was certified double gold by judges at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition after its ‘Achroous’ gin scored among the highest marks in a blind taste test.

Judges scored the drink - which takes its name from the Ancient Greek word for colourless - 96 points out of a possible 100, while also highly praising the design of the vibrant bottle.

The distillery, founded by distiller John Porteous, is based at the Tower Street Stillhouse in the historic port.

The awards, which are described as “one of the most respected and influential spirits competitions in the world”, received more than 2,500 entries from spirit makers across the globe.

James, who is the sole employee of the firm and distills every batch himself, said he was “floored” by the recognition.

He added: “The San Francisco Awards have a huge reputation, not just in the US, but across the entire drinks industry, worldwide – for Achroous to receive not just a medal, but a Double Gold, is bonkers.

“Getting the email about the medal absolutely floored me. It’s a pretty dark time right now, so winning this award is a massive boost.

“Between this and the International Wine and Spirits Competition Gold that the gin’s picked up, I couldn’t be happier with how it’s being received.”
