Leith gin company goes viral after switching to making hand sanitiser instead of booze

An Edinburgh distillery has gone viral after it announced it was going to switch production from artisanal gin to alcohol-based hand sanitiser due to shortages caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Leith Gin were overwhelmed with praise and offers of help after they put out a call for plastic bottles to package their hand gel.

The post was liked and retweeted thousands of times with offers of help pouring in from across the world, and promising to buy a bottle once normal service had resumed.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live , the slightly overwhelmed staff member manning the Leith Gin Twitter account confirmed that they had managed to find bottles, but were having trouble sourcing other ingredients.

She said: “We have sourced 1400 so far, but still looking for many more thousands. Have found glycerine I think, hydrogen peroxide proving tricky.”

The worker went on to blast an unnamed local business who had refused to sell them the chemical they needed.

She explained:

“A local wholesaler refused to sell any to us as we don’t have a trade account with them, un-bloody-believable! Totally raging here!”

As of this afternoon ( March 18) an update on Twitter thanked everyone for the “hundreds of messages and emails” asking them to be patient.

“Our small team is flat out trying to source what we need and make sanitiser,” she added.

We will keep an eye out and bring you news of when Leith’s very own locally-made hand sanitiser goes on sale, watch this space.
