Leith Depot given one month extension having been due to close down next week

Leith Depot will remain open for another month after agreeing an extension to its lease.

The popular Leith Walk bar and music venue was due to close its doors for good next week, on Tuesday 1 October, but will now continue to operate until the end of October.

Other businesses have in recent months been forced to leave the building as Drum Property wishes to turn the site into a student flat-led development.

However Leith Depot confirmed today (Wednesday) that they'd been given an extension, and it would be business as usual for the time being.

They said: "On the back of a positive meeting with our landlord, we are pleased to say that we have agreed a lease extension until 31st of October.

"For the time being, we continue business as usual and we will update you all when we know more.

"Due to the circumstances we have nothing booked in our venue; please get in touch for any gig or event dates; depotvenue@gmail.com.

"Thank you all for your continued support."

The Save Leith Walk campaign group has issued a statement saying that while they welcome the news they are disappointed the other businesses on the site weren't able to remain too.

A spokesman said: "While we welcome news that Leith Depot is being allowed to stay open for a month beyond its current lease, we are disappointed that the landlord didn’t allow the other business, which were successfully trading in the red sandstone building, to remain open too.

"Nevertheless, we hope that today’s announcement is a sign of the developer's willingness to now work with the community and secure the long-term future of this building so it can continue to be a home for locally-owned, independent shops and businesses.”

Earlier this month a mural showing three years' worth of sketches showing Leith Depot's customers had been placed outside the venue ahead of the impending closure.
