A post was put on the leisure centre's Facebook page earlier this month announcing the closure.

In the post it said: "The main pool is closed due to safety concerns with the air handling system.

"The small pool is open as normal."

The pool is used by local schools for swimming lessons.

Those with memberships for the pool, run by Parkwood Leisure, have been given access to its sister sites at Hutton Moor in Weston-super-Mare and Hengrove Park in Bristol.

Operators say that they expect the pool to re-open again fully on May 25.

In a post on its Facebook page it said: "Whilst our main pool is closed members may access our sister site of Hutton Moor in Weston or Hengrove Park Leisure Centre in Bristol.

"Members will need to show the membership card and explain they are from Backwell.

"We are currently due to re-open the main pool on 25th May but will keep Facebook and the website updated with any changes."
