Leinster’s Josh van der Flier could make shock recovery for Munster semi-final

Leinster’s Josh van der Flier could face Munster in next week’s Pro14 semi-final after making a stunning return to fitness.

The Ireland flanker was expected to miss the rest of the season after he tore his groin in the Six Nations win over France last March.

But just like last season – when he recovered from knee ligament surgery in near-record time – he’s ready to go ahead of time.

The 26-year-old will miss the Champions Cup final in Newcastle on Saturday but could be set for a dramatic comeback at the RDS in 12 days.

He said: “I was basically told it would be 12 weeks out, ‘don’t rush back, just see how you get on, then we can review if it goes well’.

“There’s a system to it, boxes you need to check all the way through and it’s gone well so far.

“I’m hoping to play in two weeks, that’s what I’m aiming for. I’ve a good bit of running under my belt now. If training goes well, hopefully I’ll be available.”
