Leinster know they can't afford to be in second gear against Benetton

Recent close skirmishes inform Leinster that they can't afford to start their Champions Cup campaign in second gear against Benetton at the RDS tomorrow.

With an away trip to Lyon to come next weekend, it is imperative that the Blues pick up an opening home victory against the much improved Italians.

With that in mind, Johnny Sexton will make his season bow for last season's Champions Cup runners-up in a team packed full of returning World Cup players.

Stuart Lancaster admitted: “It will be a strong team because we have a massive amount of respect for Treviso.

“We drew last year at The RDS. We lost the year before.

“We played them already this season in the PRO14 and we won 32-27 over there. They probably could have beaten Munster in the play-off game (last season).

“It is about zoning in into that."

But Leinster's senior coach is confident that Sexton and co will find form after a fortnight back in harness with the province, and because the occasion has focused minds.

“European weeks in Leinster are different," Lancaster commented. "You can feel it on a Monday.

“There’s not many European games you play at the RDS. I think back to the Toulouse game last year - they are special games.

"The good thing is we had last week’s training, so a lot of the lads who have had time off after the World Cup all trained last week.

“They're very much back into the way we do things here.

“If we can get a full-house for the game, it will be a great occasion and kick-start us into a very tough pool".
