Leinster House stays dry as Dail bars remain closed due to ongoing rat problem

Leinster House was officially dry last night because of its ongoing rat problem.

Sightings of a rodent over recent days in both the private and public bars have resulted in their closure until further notice.

And Dublin Live has also seen a Rentokil van parked inside the back gate of Leinster House.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland is also now believed to be involved in the crisis. A spokesman said: “All food business operators are subject to inspection on a risk basis.

“In addition to this, on foot of a complaint to the HSE or the FSAI, the usual procedures would be followed which would involve an inspection of the food premises by an environmental health officer to check compliance.

“The FSAI is not in a position to comment on individual premises until due diligence and inspections have been completed.”

The rodent was first spotted in the Members’ Bar on Tuesday afternoon by Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin who was enjoying a cup of tea with party colleague Eugene Murphy.

Mr Martin spoke briefly about his experience yesterday when he said: “In my endless pursuit of transparency, I have exposed Ratgate in Leinster House.”

Meanwhile, TD Darragh O’Brien offered to let his cat Ginger loose in pursuit of the vermin.

The latest sighting of a rodent was yesterday afternoon, sparking fears the closure orders may have to be expanded.

The restaurants and kitchen of Leinster House share corridors and areas with the bars and they could also be affected.
