Leighton Clarkson sends classy message to Blackburn after being sent back to Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Leighton Clarkson thanked Blackburn Rovers after the Championship club cut his loan short in January.

Rovers are flying high in the Championship, three points behind league leaders Bournemouth and in terrific form.

But there has been no place in the team for boyhood Rovers fan Clarkson, who joined the club on loan in the summer.

Taking to social media, Clarkson spoke highly of the one-time Premier League champions and thanked the fans for making him feel 'at home.'

"When I first knew @rovers wanted to sign me on loan there was only one place I was going," Clarkson posted on Instagram.

"Although it hasn’t gone to plan I would like to thank all the players, all the staff, and the fans for making me feel at home. I would love to wish the club all the best for the future and keep striving for promotion. Now time to get back to @liverpoolfc and work harder than ever."

Accompanying the message, Clarkson added photos of himself as a child in a Blackburn kit alongside photos of him playing for the senior side this season.

Speaking about why Blackburn sent him back, manager Tony Mowbury said that the youngster arrived at the club at a time when they were 'functioning'.

“He knows football, it’s hurting him because he’s a Rovers fan and I haven’t been able to give him the game-time and he understands that because the team is winning and functioning," said Mowbury.

Clarkson's return to Merseyside could see him feature in the FA Cup third round against Shrewsbury Town on January 9 or the League Cup semi-final against Arsenal three days earlier.
