Leighton Clarkson reveals truth about Liverpool transfer after stunning Aberdeen debut goal

Liverpool loanee Leighton Clarkson has revealed he only met his Aberdeen teammates on Saturday morning at the club's pre-match meal - just hours before firing a stunning debut goal in the Scottish Premier League fixture against St Mirren.

The 20-year-old midfielder only joined the Dons late on Friday evening after an agreement had been reached between Liverpool and the Scottish outfit, allowing the midfielder to join Jim Goodwin's side on a season-long loan.

Clarkson, who has been on the Reds' books since the age of six, wasted no time in kicking off his career in Scotland in style as he fired home a spectacular fourth goal for Aberdeen during an emphatic 4-1 over St Mirren.

However, the Blackburn-born midfielder revealed during his post-match interview with the club's media channels that he had only met some of his teammates just hours before after travelling up to Scotland on Friday night in a bid to complete the deal ahead of the Saturday afternoon fixture.

“I enjoyed it. The goal was probably one of my best hits," said Clarkson. "I had one in the first half that I sliced so I thought I was going to take a touch but it sat up so nicely I just had to hit.”

“Thankfully it went in. I knew as soon as it left my foot that it was going in. I haven’t trained with any of the lads and only met most of them in the morning at the pre-match meal.”

Clarkson had originally started on the substitutes' bench at the Pittodrie Stadium but was called into action after just twelve minutes when Hayden Coulson picked up an injury.

After marking his debut with a fine strike, Goodwin is hoping Clarkson will enjoy a more productive loan spell than the one he endured at Blackburn Rovers last campaign, which was terminated in January after a lack of game time.

"It would be great. If this loan with Leighton is a success," said Goodwin post-match. "I'd imagine Liverpool will look fondly on us next time."
