Leighton Baines backed to play until he's 40 - by the man who knows his game best

Leighton Baines can carry on playing until he's 40, says a former team-mate.

Steven Pienaar was thrilled to see Everton hand the veteran left-back a new one year contract but believes the 34-year-old's career is far from coming to an end.

The South African formed a deadly partnership with Baines at Goodison Park and has heaped praise on the veteran defender.

“It's great news,” Pienaar said of Baines' new deal.

“He keeps himself in good nick, I'm really happy for him, he is a Liverpool lad and one of the best players I've played with. He knows the club in and out, he is part of the family and any new players coming in, he's the one to go to if you need to talk. I'm really pleased he's got another year.”

Baines joined Everton from Wigan Athletic in 2007 and following former captain Phil Jagielka's departure from the Blues, he is now the longest-serving player at Goodison Park as he prepares for his 13th season at the club.
