Leigh Halfpenny recovering from sixth concussion in eight years as Johnny McNicholl awaits potentially gut-wrenching results

The Scarlets and Wales are sweating on the fitness of Leigh Halfpenny and Johnny McNicholl as both are assessed following injuries suffered in Saturday's defeat to Toulon.

Halfpenny departed with a head injury late on in the 11-6 loss and is currently undergoing the concussion protocols as part of the standard Graduated Return to Play (GRTP) programme.

The GRTP programme is a six step progressive programme that introduces players back to rugby in a safe manner - progressing through the stages of rest, light aerobic exercise, rugby specific exercise without contact, non-contact training drills, resumption of training following medical clearance and finally returning to play.

It's unclear at which stage Halfpenny would currently be at.

After this latest injury, Halfpenny has suffered six concussions in the past eight years - the most recent of which saw him miss out on Wales' World Cup Bronze match against New Zealand last year.

Meanwhile, McNicholl has undergone a scan on his ankle after a nasty looking injury - with the Scarlets likely to get the results in the coming days.

Early indications are the Wales winger. faces a long spell out of the game

There's also little time to play with in terms of turnaround for the new season.

The new PRO14 season is expected to kick-off on October 2, with the Scarlets playing the Ospreys this Friday in a pre-season friendly.

Meanwhile, Wales' bumper six-match autumn also kicks off later next month.

Wayne Pivac announces his squad for the autumn on October 6, with the first game set to take place in France on October 24 - although there is some doubt around that fixture.

Were that to not go ahead, Wales' autumn curtain-raiser would then be the postponed Six Nations clash with Scotland on October 31.

After that, there are also Autumn Nations Cup matches against Ireland, England, Georgia and either France, Fiji, Italy or Scotland.
