Leigh Halfpenny in tears as Wales match halted for six minutes after horror injury on 100th cap

Leigh Halfpenny's 100th Test match was cruelly over after just 30 seconds as the Wales full-back was left in tears on the pitch.

Halfpenny took to the field at No. 15 to earn the cap milestone, having reached 96 outings for Wales and four Test appearances for the British and Irish Lions.

With just 30 seconds on the clock at the Principality Stadium against Canada, Halfpenny went down just inside the Wales half with what appeared to be a serious knee injury. He had launched a Welsh counter-attack before his knee appeared to give way before he was tackled.

Commentators later said that Halfpenny had suffered suspected anterior cruciate ligament damage, while Wayne Pivac confirmed a scan would be carried out over the coming days to determine the extent of the damage.

Play carried on while Halfpenny initially received medical treatment, with the hosts giving away a penalty moments later, but the game was later halted for six minutes while the 32-year-old received further attention.

Appearing to be in a lot of pain, Halfpenny was visibly in tears before being taken from the field on a buggy, acknowledging fans' rapturous applause as he was replaced by Nick Tompkins.

Wales centre Jamie Roberts cited something of a Welsh injury curse, given Alun Wyn Jones and Justin Tipuric's injuries a week ago at Murrayfield.

Commentating for Scrum V, he said of Halfpenny: "I can't praise the guy enough.

"For him to be playing at this level 13 years [after his debut] after what his body's been through says enough in itself.

"When teams played against us, they would change their defensive tactics because Leigh Halfpenny is in our team. You knew you could not give away a penalty in your own half.

"It's such a sad sight. Hope it's a minor injury."
