Leigh Griffiths 'wanted' by Sunderland as Celtic striker could be handed loan chance

League One Sunderland are reportedly preparing a shock loan move for Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths.

The Black Cats are in need of goals after Charlie Wykes departure and the Scotland international fits the bill.

Griffiths was cleared by Police Scotland on Wednesday following allegations he sent inappropriate messages to a teenage girl.

The 30-year-old has just penned a new one-year deal with Celtic before he was sent home from the club's training camp and now the Scottish Sun state he has interest from Wearside.

Manager Ange Postecoglou admitted last week he hadn't given the striker any thought while he was put his focus in on-field improvements ahead of Champions League qualifying.

He said: “You know how much time I have spent thinking about that? You’ve asked me and I’ve just thought about it.

“We’ll let it run its course and once it’s done and we get back up to Scotland then we’ll deal with it then.

“I’ve not spoken to him."

Griffiths at his peak offers a threat in front of goal but he hasn't reached the 15-goal tally in any of his past four Celtic seasons due to his reduced role.
