Leigh Griffiths undergoes fitness tests as Celtic striker steps up return bid

Leigh Griffiths is edging closer to making a return before the end of the season.

The Celtic striker has been out since earlier December as he overcomes personal problems.

But Griffiths will undergo fitness tests on Thursday in a bid to get back on the pitch.

Neil Lennon earlier this month urged the 28-year-old to target his comeback for the Scottish Cup Final.

But the Scotland star could even return before then as Celtic home in on eight in a row.

Lennon, though, insisted there is still no time scale set for his big comeback.

At his weekly press conference, Lennon said: "Griffiths is having his fitness tests today. He’s still got a lot of work to do.”

Lennon’s side face Kilmarnock on Saturday when they will also celebrate the life and service of Billy McNeill, who passed away at the start of the week.

Celtic then face Aberdeen next weekend before Rangers eight days after that. Then the Hoops  take on Hearts on the final day of the season before facing them again at Hampden on May 25.

Earlier this month, Lennon said of Griffiths: "“What have we got, six weeks? Yeah, it’s realistic for him.

“But he’ll have to play and train at least two weeks going into that, so he then has a target of four weeks.

“He’s had targets. He’s working away in the background and doing his double sessions."
