Leigh Griffiths thinks Celtic could have scored more against Rangers in 5-1 win

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths reckons Rangers were lucky to escape Ibrox with only a 5-1 defeat back in 2017.

Newcomer Pedro Caixinha received a rude awakening as he watched on helplessly from the sidelines while the Hoops dominated their rivals from first minute to last, the Daily Record reports.

Griffiths was on target to make it 2-0 with Scott Sinclair, Callum McGregor, Mikael Lustig and Dedryck Boyata also netting for Celtic as Brendan Rodgers' Invincibles piled the misery on Rangers.

The Scottish international proved a more than able deputy up front with leading man Moussa Dembele sidelined due to injury.

And with the score only 2-0 at the break - Griffiths is adamant Rangers were fortunate the game was still a contest at half time.

Speaking to Celtic TV, he said: “Before the second 5-1 game (that season), we'd played them twice in six days, and we’d beaten them in the semi-final at Hampden.

“At Ibrox, I think the 5-1 scoreline was flattering for them, because the amount of chances we missed in the first half was ridiculous.

“It could have been five at half-time. But to go to your rivals in their own back yard and beat them 5-1, as easily as we did, I think that was a day for the fans that they’ll never forget.

"For me as well, going there and winning 5-1 so easily, it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played in.”
