Leigh Griffiths new Celtic contract labelled 'no brainer' as Charlie Mulgrew rates his Scotland Euro chances

Charlie Mulgrew says it's a 'no-brainer' for Celtic to sign Leigh Griffiths up to a contract extension.

And the former Hoops defender says Steve Clarke should be clearing space for him in his Euro 2020 squad after the wayward hitman got back among the goals against Aberdeen.

Griffiths has been a key player for Celtic and for Scotland in the past but he has started just nine games at club level this season and was left out of Clarke's last Scotland squad.

His contract at Parkhead is up in the air but the club do have the option to extend it until 2022 if they choose to do so.

He emerged from the bench to net a key equaliser against Aberdeen in their last league outing.

And Mulgrew, who featured heavily for Celtic and Scotland during his career, reckons a new manager should be keen to keep Griffiths and get the best out of him.

He also wants to see the 30-year-old repeat his 2017 heroics against England when the two face at the Euros in June.

Mulgrew told Sky Sports: “You might get an extra bit of motivation from Leigh because he is coming into the last year of his contract if Celtic take up the option.

“If a manager can get the arm around him and get him scoring, a fit Leigh Griffiths is worth his weight in gold.

“Get him fit, get him confident and get him scoring goals. I think it's a no-brainer.

“Also, if I was Scotland manager I would get him in the squad somehow for the Euros.

“He’s a goalscorer. You saw what he did against England the last time and he turns up for the big occasions.

“He is somebody that I would want in my squad and somebody I would want to get the best out of.”
