Leigh Griffiths makes emotional Celtic admission as striker holds back the tears after trademark goal

Leigh Griffiths admits he almost broke down in tears after his first goal in over seven months.

The striker scored a stunning free-kick as Celtic hammered Nomme Kalju 5-0 in Champions League qualifying to effectively secure their place in the third round.

There was a striking outpouring of emotion from both the player and the fans inside Celtic Park as Griffiths dropped to his knee and held his head in his hands.

The scene evoked memories of his famous set-piece double against England in 2017 but held even greater personal significance amid his battle with depression.

"Words can’t describe how good a feeling that was when the ball hit the back of the net. I’m absolutely delighted," said Griffiths.

"So much hard work has been done, not just by me, but by the backroom staff and all connected with myself to get back on the pitch. I can’t score goals without my teammates, my biggest thanks goes to them

"Hopefully that‘s the start of more goals. My kids were watching me and I had friends in the stands too. I was close to crying.

"It’s up there with the England moments if I’m honest. Big thank you to my teammates and everyone connected with the club, if it wasn't for them then I wouldn’t be back on the pitch."

Griffiths' strike was the third in a five-goal hammering of the Estonian champions, kicked off by Kristoffer Ajer's first-half header.

Ryan Christie added a second from the penalty spot before crashing in another after the break.

By the time Callum McGregor curled in the fifth the tie was all-but over, leaving Neil Lennon hugely satisfied with the night's work - and with his firing-again front man.

He said: "It was a brilliant performance. I can’t ask any more of the players. I thought in the second-half we were very good. Five goals and a clean sheet, that’s a nice luxury to have.

“I’m delighted for Leigh. There is an amount of anticipation and to be fair the reception he’s got from the players, the supporters, the club, that makes me very proud. It’ll do his confidence the world of good.”
