Leigh Griffiths kicks smoke canister into St Johnstone fans during Dundee defeat

Leigh Griffiths could be in hot water with the SFA after he was filmed booting a smoke canister into the St Johnstone fans during Dundee’s Premier Sports Cup defeat at Dens Park.

The footage shows the striker - on loan from Celtic - kicking the blue smoke canister into the travelling support in the Dark Blues 2-0 defeat to the cup holders.

The incident is almost certainly to be reviewed by the Hampden beaks and Griffiths could face punishment, reports The Daily Record.

In the video clip shared on social media, Griffiths can be seen walking over to the pyrotechnic which was thrown onto the pitch and launching it back into the punters.

It was for those travelling fans that delighted St Johnstone boss Callum Davidson dedicated his team’s win.

They lifted both domestic knockout trophies last season but fans missed out on a big day at Hampden due to Covid restrictions.

And Davidson said: “It’s one of those that we said we’d do it for the supporters.

“I thought they were brilliant tonight for us. They kept us going all the way through.

“It is really important to have them as last year they were not allowed to come.

“Five trips to Hampden. When you say it like that, it sounds pretty good.

“It’s just great to go back to Hampden really. It’s fantastic.

“It’s a great achievement by a club like St Johnstone to get there again.”
