Leigh Griffiths Hibs transfer alert as Celtic contract countdown has them and Aberdeen watching on

Leigh Griffiths could be available on a free transfer this summer, alerting boyhood club Hibs and Aberdeen.

The Celtic striker has struggled to make an impression for the Hoops this season and the Scottish Sun reports that the deadline by which the club have to make a decision on the striker’s future is fast approaching.

The Scottish Premiership runners up have until 30 April to trigger a one-year extension to Griffiths’ deal, otherwise he will be out of contract this summer.

If Celtic don’t take up the option then the striker could find himself missing out on up to £1million.

He’s not likely to be short of suitors if he does find himself a free agent though.

Aberdeen are understood to be monitoring the situation, and Celtic captain Scott Brown is well placed to try and convince Griffiths that joining him at Pittodrie next season, where Brown will be player-assistant manager, would be his best move.

Hibs are also likely to at least explore the possibility. Griffiths has supported the club all his life and enjoyed two previous successful loan spells at Easter Road before joining Celtic from Wolves.

The Hibees weren't prepared to pay the money to sign Griffiths permanently, but a free transfer could be too good to ignore.

Owner Ron Gordon admitted the club could sell “one or two” of their prized assets this summer, of which is Kevin Nisbet.

Hibs knocked back a £3million offer for the ex-Dunfermline hitman from Birmingham City in January, which prompted the player to hand in a transfer request.

There is likely to be renewed interest in Nisbet this summer, and if they believe they can replace him with Griffiths while cashing in, it might make financial sense.
