Leigh Griffiths gets mixed Celtic reception after making return to action against West Ham

Leigh Griffiths was booed on his return to the Celtic team during today’s friendly against West Ham.

The striker had been investigated by police after being accused of sending inappropriate social media messages to underage girls.

He returned home early from the Hoops’ pre-season tour of Wales, but the Scotland international was cleared of any criminality by cops.

Ange Postecoglou threw him on as a half-time substitute in this afternoon’s game at Celtic Park, and the 30-year-old was given a mixed reception by the 18,000 fans at the game.

As he took his first corner on the right hand side, there was a mixture of boos, cheers and claps for the former Hibs and Wolves striker, and that continued whenever he was on the ball.

Griffiths looked set to leave the club in the summer before he was handed a shock one-year contract extension by Postecoglou.

With Odsonne Edouard ’s future still up in the air and Albian Ajeti yet to set the heather on fire in a Celtic shirt, Griffiths was retained as a striking option as the club keep trying to add new faces to their squad.

But this latest incident means the pressure is really on to perform if he is to feature regularly this season.
