Leigh Griffiths backs Celtic to bang in 100 Premiership goals this season

Leigh Griffiths insists Celtic can smash 100 goals in the Premiership this season.

The Hoops fired five against Motherwell yesterday in an emphatic win at Fir Park to make it 12 in two league games.

Celtic romped to the title with 77 strikes last season under ex-boss Brendan Rodgers and current gaffer Neil Lennon.

But Griffiths believes with the firepower they have at their disposal, they can post a three-figure tally this term.

The Scotland striker bagged Celtic’s second with Kris Ajer, James Forrest, Ryan Christie and Odsonne Edouard also getting on the scoresheet.

Griffiths said: “It’s possible we could score over 100 goals this season. We’ve started with 12 in two games – so we’ve only got 88 to go. As long as we play on the front foot and create chances, we’ve players who can put the ball in the net.

“We can get more than the 77 from last season because every time we get in the opposition half we look like scoring.

“We have myself, Odsonne, Ryan and James Forrest scoring again.

“Even big Kris strolled up from right-back – he was like Duncan Ferguson when he got there! It was such a composed finish.”

Griffiths is edging closer to full fitness and getting back to his best.

He celebrated with Hoops fans after his goal but admits he was selfish for not enjoying the moment with team-mates.

Griff said: “Looking back, it was selfish from me. Obviously, you want to go to the fans but my team-mates are more important so next time I’ll stand and they can come to me.

“I’m still a bit away from full fitness but the more games I start and get 60 to 80 minutes under my belt, the better I’ll become.”

Griffiths hailed star man Ajer and insisted he was similar to £75million former Celt Virgil van Dijk.

He said: “The sky’s the limit for Ajer.

“For such a young lad, the world is at his feet.

“He reminds me of Virgil but Virgil wouldn’t have been happy playing at right-back!”

Gaffer Lennon wants new faces in before the transfer window closes with £25m in the bank from the sale of Kieran Tierney.

He said: “We had a quiet weekend because it was hectic elsewhere. We’ll assess the money for Kieran but we have a big game on Tuesday (against Cluj) that’s not easy.”
