Leigh Centurions sign fearless utility back 'Brendan The Brave' in exciting addition to Super League

Leigh Centurions have completed the signing of NRL speedster Brendan Elliot.

Rugby League Live revealed earlier this month that the Centurions were considering a move for the 27-year-old, who has 65 NRL appearances to his name.

Now it can be confirmed that Elliot, nicknamed 'Brendan The Brave' due to his style of play, has put pen to paper on a deal with the Leythers.

The Centurions have been long admirers of the utility back and actually signed him midway through the 2018 season. However, the move was blocked at the eleventh hour after his club at the time, Gold Coast Titans, suffered an injury crisis and refused to let him leave.

But he will now get the chance to make his mark at Leigh Sports Village in the club's latest bid to bolster their squad ahead of the season.

He is currently recovering from an ACL injury, which had left the Centurions cautious of finalising a deal. But his rehabilitation is ahead of schedule and resulted in the club securing a move.

Confirmation is expected in the coming days.

Elliot has played for Sydney Roosters, Newcastle Knights, Gold Coast and Manly during his seven-year spell in the NRL.

In a further boost to the newly-promoted Leythers, they look set to be granted an additional quota spot, with James Bell to be made exempt.

Overseas players contracted to Toronto Wolfpack were given dispensation from the quota for the period of their contract with the demised club, meaning they would not take up a quota spot at their new club. But Bell was not given the same privilege as his contract with the Wolfpack was never lodged, despite agreeing to join the club from Toulouse Olympique.

Owner Derek Beaumont told Rugby League Live two weeks ago that he intended to appeal the decision and it is understood they are close to overturning the verdict.

When confirmed, it will mean the Centurions still have three quota spots at their disposal to further enhance their squad during the campaign. Beaumont has not ruled out investing in a marquee player should the right person become available.

Leigh's signings ahead of their Super League return include Lewis Tierney, Ben Flower and Ryan Brierley while they recently added Ireland international Tyrone McCarthy following his departure from Salford Red Devils.
