Leicestershire Foxes captain Colin Ackermann has set a new world record for the best bowling figures in the history of T20 cricket.

The 27-year-old took 7-18 to help the Foxes to victory over the Birmingham Bears in Wednesday night’s T20 Blast clash, beating the previous best figures of 6-5, set by Somerset spinner Arul Suppiah back in 2011.

Ackermann’s haul helped skittle the Bears for 134 as they went down in pursuit of Leicestershire’s score of 189-5, and moved them up to fourth in the Northern division.

Having already removed Birmingham opener Michael Burgess for 10 in the third over, Ackermann took his final six wickets in just 12 balls to drag the Bears from 118-3 to 134-9.

No player in world cricket had previously taken seven wickets in a T20 match. The best figures in an international match belong to Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis, who took 6-8 in aa match against Zimbabwe in 2012.
