Leicester Walkers Crisps factory fire erupts with building 'filling with smoke'

Firefighters are battling a large fire at the Walkers Crisps factory in Leicester with staff forced to evacuate as smoke filled the building.

Pictures show smoke billowing from the building, with nine crews from fire stations across the city and county called to the incident.

Emergency services were called shortly before 10.45am, with the factory evacuated, Leicestershire Live reports.

Witnesses said smoke was filling the building after the fire broke out.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call from the site stating that the factory filling with smoke, with the roof possibly on fire."

No one has been injured, 999 teams confirmed.

Fire crews from as far away as Market Harborough and Coalville are at the incident.

A Walkers spokesperson said: "Our Bursom Road site in Leicester was safely evacuated this morning due to a fire on the roof of the building.

"The fire has now been brought under control and the fire brigade remains on site as a precautionary measure. Everybody on site has been accounted for.”

It comes at a difficult time for the company, which is already experiencing supply chain issues.

Walkers previously confirmed that an IT upgrade is the reason behind the shortage of its crisps.

It is understood the technical issue has been fixed but it is the knock-on effect that has been disrupting supplies.

A Walkers spokesman said: “A recent IT system upgrade has disrupted the supply of some of our products.

“Our sites are still making crisps and snacks but at a reduced scale.

“We're doing everything we can to increase production and get people's favourites back on shelves. We're very sorry for the inconvenience caused.”
