Leicester suffer major injury scare ahead of Chelsea clash as Brendan Rodgers' gamble backfires

Leicester City look set to be without Jonny Evans for Tuesday night's crucial Premier League clash against Chelsea.

The defender has been suffering from a heel injury of late.

One so serious that it caused him to pull out of last Friday's shock 4-2 defeat at home against Newcastle United and was then in the stands against former club Manchester United on Tuesday night.

However, he was named in the Foxes' starting lineup alongside Wesley Fofana and Caglar Soyuncu in a back three for the FA Cup final against Chelsea after making good progress following the 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

"We’ll give him another day," Rodgers said in his pre-match press conference. "He’s progressed really well in this last 24 hours.

"It’s a discussion between myself and Jonny. Ultimately, you’ve got to speak with the players. He’s a warrior, and if there's any which way he can play, even if he’s not 100 per cent, he’ll be out there.

"It's a showpiece game, so players want to be involved in those.

"In my time at the club, he has been immense, so if he's not available, it would be a big loss for us.

"We've got other players who could come in, but if Jonny is available and fit enough to play, it's a huge boost for us."

As things turned out, Rodgers' decision to start Evans backfired as the defender limped off just after the hour mark at Wembley.

The extent of the injury is likely to be revealed in the coming hours, but Evans is certainly a doubt for when the two teams meet again at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

With the game in west London having massive top-four implications, Leicester's recent form without Evans would suggest their Champions League qualification hopes are in danger.
