Leicester are interested in signing Southampton’s Jannik Vestergaard - but for less than the £26million they were prepared to pay in January.
Leicester came close to landing Vestergaard during the last transfer window, only for Southampton coach Ralph Hasenhuttl to block the move late on.
Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers is still keen on adding the Denmark international to his squad and the defender is on his hitlist of centre-half targets.
Leicester are not willing to offer as much this time because Vestergaard has made just one Premier League start since January and has entered the final two years of his contract.
The financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic will also have an affect on transfer values this summer.
It is understood Vestergaard would still be keen on a move to Leicester and he wants to play regularly again in the Premier League.
He was a mainstay of Saints defence, starting 11 of their first 12 Premier League games, before Hasenhuttl axed him when their form collapsed in the autumn.
Werder Bremen were also interested in re-signing Vestergaard, who cost Southampton £18million from Borussia Moenchengladbach two years ago, in January.
Vestergaard had 18 successful months with Bremen, but would prefer to stay in the Premier League.
Vestergaard, 27, said: “I came close to moving to another club during the winter window, but the club and the manager told me that they wanted to keep me.
“At this moment of the season, I have not spoken to the club about next season and about the future, so I really don’t know what will happen.”
