Leicester mosque hit and run: CCTV shows moment woman saves her sister's life

Shocking CCTV footage shows the moment a woman pulled her sister out of the way of a speeding car during a hit and run outside a mosque in Leicester.

One worshipper, believed to be in his 40s, is fighting for his life after outside the Masjid At-Taqwa mosque in the early hours of this morning.

A teenage boy was also injured after being hit by the car as he left Taraweeh prayers, which are said during the month of Ramadan.

A chilling clip shows two sisters being clipped by the driver as they narrowly escaped being mowed down before the hit and run at around 1am.

Police are appealing for information after the driver failed to stop at the scene.

The CCTV shows the women about to cross the road before one pushes the other out of the way as they narrowly avoid being hit by the car.

Eyewitness Saira Waraich told of how she saved her sister Asiyah's life saying: "I went to get the Eid gifts from my uncle's car and as I was crossing I could hear car sounds really loud.

"My sister tells me car's coming fast, car's coming fast, so I grabbed her hand, we were running and [as] the car comes close he's diverted his steering wheel to us.

"So I grabbed my sister's hand, I push her back, I step back myself and the car comes right past me, hits my shopping bag and hits the other guy who was crossing the road as well."

Another witness Amar Waraich said: "The street is quite small and what we saw was a car come really loud whizzing past... he does a u-turn and the same car comes speeding back.

"That time is when my nieces had taken the gifts from me and I hear a very loud noise - 'bang' - at which point we've then ran and had a look - and in that time the car was gone.

"He had hit someone and they both were on the floor and there was no sign of the driver."

The Masjid At-Taqwa Leicester mosque wrote on its Facebook page: "Last night after Taraweeh, one of the brothers who prayed with us was the victim of a hit and run just outside the masjid [mosque].

"He is fighting for his life, and we implore anyone reading this post to ask Allah the Lord of The Worlds to grant him a full and speedy recovery, and to grant his family plentiful patience to get through this very difficult time.

"We remind you all to be very vigilant and to take care when leaving the masjid."

Leicestershire Police said it received a call from East Midlands Ambulance Service to a report of a man in his 40s and a teenage boy being struck by a vehicle.

A spokesman for the force said: "Both have been taken to hospital, the boy sustained a minor injury while the man is in a serious condition.

"The vehicle failed to stop at the scene and enquiries are ongoing to locate it."

Leicestershire Police does not believe the vehicle deliberately drove at pedestrians at this stage of its investigation.

The force is not treating the incident as terror-related.
