Leicester is staying in lockdown for at least another two weeks - with some rules relaxed

Leicester is set to remain in lockdown for another two weeks, Matt Hancock has announced.

The Health Secretary told MPs the city, which is the first place in the country to face a local lockdown, will only partially relax some measures.

He said in the House of Commons on Thursday (July 16): "At the end of June, we made the decision to close schools and non-essential shops in the city.

"This was not an easy decision but one we had to take."

Mr Hancock added: "I committed to reviewing the measures every two weeks.

"This afternoon, I held a further meeting with local leaders. The latest data shows the seven-day infection rate is now 119 cases per 100,000 people."

He said it was a positive indicator, but it still remains 'well above the national average'.

From July 24, schools and early years childcare restrictions will be removed, but the hospitality venues, unlike the rest of England, will remain closed.

Restrictions for travel and gatherings of up to six people will also stay in place.

Non-essential shops can reopen, but Mr Hancock announced a new local power to close them in Leicester where necessary.

The Midlands city and some of its suburbs have had tighter restrictions imposed since the end of June in an attempt to bring down infection rates after they appeared to spike.

It came just as other towns and cities in England began to reopen its hospitality and beauty venues.
