Leicester have already explained Hamza Choudhury stance amid Newcastle United transfer links

Newcastle United are gearing up for their second Premier League game of the season as they make the trip to face Aston Villa on Saturday.

Steve Bruce's side will be looking to bounce back from the opening day defeat against West Ham United and register their first point on the board at Villa Park.

In the meantime, the Magpies have been heavily linked with strengthening their squad before the transfer window slams shut on August 31.

Hamza Choudhury is reportedly close to agreeing a switch to St James' Park from Leicester City, seven months after the move initially fell through, according to the Daily Mail.

The midfielder has two-years left on his current deal at the Foxes and was open to leaving the club back in January to try and get more game time under his belt.

At the time, Leicester had lost a number of key players through injury and were forced to play Wilfred Ndidi at centre-back, which meant Choudhury would get minutes in his place.

Newcastle are currently in the market for a central midfielder and would be looking to add someone in that department, with Choudhury being the obvious name due to his previous links.

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers spoke about the previous links back in the winter window and admitted that he would 'grant him that possibility' to leave should the Blues bring in a midfielder.

Having signed Frenchman Boubakary Soumare from Lille, Leicester have done that which opens the potential that Choudhury could be surplus to requirements at the King Power Stadium.

Speaking in February, Rodgers said: “I said earlier in the [January] window that he wasn’t a player that we wanted to lose. He’s a very important player for our squad, but of course all players want to play.

“We were going to grant him that possibility if we could get someone in.

“There was Hamza’s situation, with one or two possibilities around in terms of bringing a midfield player in, but it just wasn’t going to work out for us, so we didn’t end up bringing anyone in.”

Newcastle have made just one signing so far this summer, as Joe Willock joined for £25million from Arsenal.

Choudhury, who featured just ten times in the league for the Foxes last season, could well be their second and those previous comments from Rodgers suggest that they would be open to letting him leave.
