Leicester City, Norwich and Leeds United players star - how Northern Ireland fared this weekend

In the latest instalment of a new feature for Belfast Live Sport - our man Connor O'Neill takes a look at how the lads plying their trade in England got on this weekend.

From the Premier League to League One, we've got all you need to know covered in what was another action-packed weekend of football across the water.

Premier League

Brendan Rodgers collected his third win as Leicester City boss after his side overcame Bournemouth at the King Power Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Jonny Evans played the full 90 minutes for the Foxes - who had goals from Wes Morgan and Jamie Vardy to thank for their 2-0 victory.

While over in Manchester, Craig Cathcart was an unused substitute as his Watford side suffered a 2-1 defeat against Manchester United.

Championship

Jamal Lewis' Norwich City extended their lead at the top of the Championship table to five points after edging past Middlesbrough at the Riverside. 

Lewis completed the full 90 minutes for Daniel Farke's side, who claimed a 1-0 win thanks to Onel Hernandez's goal - while George Saville and Paddy McNair were unused substitutes for Boro.

Leeds moved into second after coming from behind to beat Millwall at Elland Road.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell returned to complete the full 90 minutes for the Whites, while Stuart Dallas was an unused substitute for Marcelo Bielsa's side, who had Pablo Hernandez's double to thank for their 3-2 win.

But Shane Ferguson was a notable omission from Neil Harris' matchday squad.

Leeds were able to move into second after Oliver Norwood's Sheffield United suffered a surprise 3-2 home defeat to Bristol City.

Billy Sharp had the fired the Blades ahead, but Andreas Weimann's double turned the game on its head. Scott Hogan then levelled for Chris Wilder's side, but with seven minutes remaining, Weimann struck again to complete his hat-trick.

At the opposite end of the table, Josh Magennis' Bolton Wanderers boosted their chances of Championship survival with a 2-1 win away at QPR.

Magennis completed the full 90 minutes for the Trotters, who are now five points from safety.

Elsewhere in the division, Corry Evans' Blackburn Rovers suffered a 2-1 defeat away at Aston Villa.

The Belfast-born midfielder was surprisingly left out of the Rovers matchday squad for the game at Villa Park - despite travelling with his side to the Midlands.

Checkatrade Trophy

Tom Flanagan and Will Grigg suffered Wembley heartbreak after their Sunderland side were beaten on penalties by Portsmouth in the final of the Checkatrade Trophy.

Despite taking a first-half lead through Aiden McGeady, the Black Cats were pegged back when Nathan Thompson drew Pompey level with eight minutes of normal time remaining.

Jamal Lowe then fired Pompey ahead in the second period of extra-time, before McGeady struck in the 119th minute to send the tie to penalties.

McGeady and Gareth Evans both scored their side's opening penalties, before Lee Cattermole saw his spot kick saved by Craig MacGillivray.

Brett Pitman, Lynden Gooch, Lee Brown, Max Power, Jamal Lowe and Luke O'Nien then all converted from 12-yards, before Oliver Hawkins kept his cool to score the decisive penalty and hand Kenny Jackett's side the trophy.

League One

Accrington Stanley's relegation fears worsened after they were beaten 1-0 by Fleetwood Town.

Paul Smyth's side now sit two points above the drop zone with seven games remaining.

But Oxford United, the side of Gavin Whyte and Mark Sykes, moved closer to safety after recording a 2-1 win over Wycombe at the Kassam Stadium.

Whyte was left out of Karl Robinson's matchday squad, while Sykes came on for the final two minutes.

Also omitted from his side's squad was Jordan Thompson of Blackpool.

Despite being fit and available for the game against Plymouth at Bloomfield Road, Seasiders boss Terry McPhillips opted to leave the midfielder out of his side's 18-man squad for the 2-2 draw.
