Leicester City injury hopes boosted over Kasper Schmeichel before Liverpool clash

Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel could be available to play against Liverpool this weekend.

The shot-stopper initially appeared to be knocked out cold during Denmark's win over Iceland on Sunday, prompting fears he would be out of action when the Foxes come to Anfield.

The incident happened on the stroke of half-time, when Schmeichel was caught in the head by a trailing knee from Iceland's Albert Gudmundsson as he knelt down to claim a long pass.

Fortunately after medical supervision, the 34-year-old was able to walk off the pitch and was replaced at half-time by Frederik Ronnow.

He did seem in some discomfort as he went down the tunnel, however, Brendan Rodgers' fear his goalkeeper would be unavailable have been reduced as he trained alongside his Danish team-mates on Monday.

Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand said his number one was not knocked out during the incident - but further assessments would follow.

He said: "Kasper was never unconscious. He was there the whole time. During the break, however, there was no doubt he should not continue playing.

“He looked better after the match. We have to see what it looks like from here. We hope nothing serious has happened to Kasper.”

However, fewer than 24 hours on and Schmeichel was back on the training pitch, preparing for Denmark’s Nations League tie with Belgium on Wednesday, with the winner finishing top of the group.

And on Monday, Hjulmand said: “Kasper has slept well, has no pain and looks to have escaped well from the accident.

“Now we have to see how it goes today and tomorrow, but it looks very positive with Kasper Schmeichel.”

If the goalkeeper plays against Belgium, he will almost certainly be available for the Liverpool game.

Schmeichel has not missed a Premier League match for Leicester since the final day of the 2017-18 season, so deputy keeper Danny Ward who switched from Liverpool to the King Power stadium more than two years ago, is still waiting to make his league debut.
