Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers makes title claim as Liverpool open 10-point gap

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has moved to play down the suggestion that his side are in the title race, labelling runaway leaders Liverpool a 'fantastic' team.

After watching his side unexpectedly drop points against Norwich City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, the Northern Irishman was insistent that the Foxes' disappointment will not last, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Everton to come on Wednesday night.

He was also adamant that the Premier League title is not something his side are focused on, with talk about winning another league title coming purely from elsewhere.

Rodgers explained: “It’s not something that we’ve ever spoken about. Everyone else has, talking about Manchester City and ourselves.

“These players have been brilliant. It says everything that we’ve sat here and we’ve drawn a game and everyone’s disappointed. The players have been great - we just weren’t quite at our level [against Norwich]. We still managed to get back and get a point.

“We’ll just move on from it and press the reset button in the next couple of days."

Looking ahead to the Boxing Day clash between the top two in the Premier League - Liverpool's next league game due to their trip to Qatar - Rodgers was keen to praise his former club and the work that his successor Jurgen Klopp has done.

Rodgers added: "Liverpool are a fantastic team. They’ve lost once in 18 months. They’re on an incredible run. For us, we’re in a fantastic position at this stage of the season and we’re looking to continue to develop our game and our work.”

The Reds could see their lead at the summit cut to seven points ahead of that game if Leicester go to Manchester City and win next weekend while Klopp's men are in Qatar for the FIFA Club World Cup.

Alternatively, a City win at the Etihad would mean Liverpool's 10-point lead remaining intact while they would also have a game in hand against West Ham United.
