Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers' defiant message ahead of Man City clash

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has played down the prospect of helping his former side Liverpool win the Premier League title, instead insisting his side are only focusing on themselves.

The Foxes, who still have an outside chance of claiming seventh, are expected to play a huge role in the title race as they face Manchester City on Monday night.

Pep Guardiola’s side currently hold a one point lead over Jurgen Klopp’s men with two games remaining, and a win for Rodgers’ side at the Etihad would hand the Reds a massive boost in the title race - providing they overcome Newcastle United on Saturday night.

But despite many Reds fans hoping for a help in hand from their former boss, Rodgers insists he is only interested in seeing how his players cope with the increased focus on the final two games of the season.

“I haven’t given it a great deal of thought,” the Leicester City boss said. "We have games before that but my job is to do Leicester a favour. Every game is important.

“These are exciting games in this last period of the season and we will look to give our best.

"Our only concern is ourselves. We have to concentrate on our own performance enough to get some good results in these last three games. It then gives us a great springboard to finish the season, then have a real good pre-season to get ready for next year.

"You've seen me play the younger players, I want to see how they are under pressure in the big games.

"We will be doing everything we can, in every game, to get a result so I think its a wonderful opportunity for us. It's certainly not a negative."

And despite there only being two games remaining in the season, Rodgers, whose Liverpool side lost the title in the last few games of the 2013/14 season, believes a lot can still happen.

"There is still a lot that can still happen these last few games and I only know too well about that," he added. "Three games to go and that is when it disappeared for us, but both teams have been absolutely brilliant.

"Man City were excellent in dealing with the situation of the derby game, especially in the second half, the level of the game was fantastic.

"Liverpool have been in the hunt, obviously they were seven points clear at the start of the season and they have fought really well.

"Both are top class teams. There is still a wee bit to go and only then can you reflect on it all at the end of the season."
