Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers issues fresh James Maddison update amid Arsenal transfer offer

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has suggested that he believes Arsenal target James Maddison is set to stay with the Foxes amid a transfer offer from the Gunners.

football.london exclusively revealed earlier this week that Edu had lodged an opening bid for the Leicester playmaker as Mikel Arteta remains keen to recruit a creative midfielder.

The bid was a player-plus-cash deal, with the East-Midlanders being offered one of either Joe Willock, Ainsley Maitland-Niles or Reiss Nelson, with striker Eddie Nketiah also being mentioned too.

There is the belief that the Foxes will reject the offer, with the FA Cup winners keen to keep Maddison, but should they be unable to, are aiming for a cash-only deal.

Now Rodgers has revealed that he sees Maddison remaining with the club this summer despite the links with a switch to the Emirates Stadium appearing to grow stronger by the day.

When asked if the 24-year-old is happy to stay with Leicester during the Foxes' pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend's Community Shield meeting with Manchester City, Rodgers said: "I believe so, I haven't been told anything to say that he wouldn't be.

"He's happy and training and working very hard. He's recently become a father so responsibility off the pitch there as well.

"Clearly, there is obviously gossip and speculation that goes around, especially at this time of year. James is a very important member of our squad here, a very talented player.

"His season was disrupted a little bit last year with injury but hopefully this year he can go on and show the real top player that he is."

Maddison still has three years left to run on his most recent deal with Leicester, having only penned fresh terms at the King Power Stadium last summer.
