Leicester 1 Man City 1 (1-3 on penalties): City into last four of EFL Cup as Foxes pay price for poor spot kicks

Manchester City were made to battle for their place in the EFL Cup semi-finals after beating Leicester 3-1 on penalties at the King Power Stadium.

Kevin De Bruyne scored on his first start since returning from injury before substitute Marc Albrighton struck a magnificent equaliser with quarter of an hour to go to take the tie to penalties.

After three consecutive penalty misses from Leicester, Oleksandar Zinchenko fired into the top corner to send City through to defend their crown.

Both managers made wholesale changes to their side with Pep Guardiola handing 17-year-old Eric Garcia his first professional start.

And after dominating the early stages with 72 per cent possession, City went ahead in some style.

De Bruyne picked up the ball on the left before selling Ramza Choudhury with an excellent piece of skill. He took a touch before striking a powerful low effort from 20 yards into the corner.

But after some persistence in the second half, Leicester levelled when Wilfred Ndidi played a brilliant pass over the top to Albrighton and with one touch, he smashed a volley past Ari Muric.

City rallied by sending on Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling and went close through former Leicester man Riyad Mahrez but couldn't find a way through.

In the penalty shootout, Christian Fuchs, Caglar Soyuncu and James Maddison all missed, allowing Zinchenko to smash his spot-kick into the top corner.

It wasn't vintage City, but they're through to the semi-finals along with Burton, who stunned Middlesbrough with a 1-0 win at the Riverside Stadium thanks to Jake Hesketh's second-half strike.
