Four hearing-impaired persons were refused entry to Legoland Discovery Center, an indoor amusement facility for playing with toys and Lego bricks, in Minato Ward, Tokyo, in April, on the grounds that their safety could not be guaranteed if they were not accompanied by someone unimpaired.
The facility operator has apologized for their treatment.
The Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry demanded earlier this month that the operator correct such treatment, saying that it highly likely violates a law to eliminate discrimination against persons with disabilities. The ministry also plans to ask similar facilities nationwide to be more careful about how they treat the disabled.
According to the operator, the Japanese arm of Merlin Entertainments, the incident occurred on April 21, when the four persons visited the facility.
The operator has admitted that the treatment violated the law. On June 11, it deleted a statement from its website that had required visitors who showed their disability certificates when entering the facility to be accompanied by someone.
The operator also released a comment that said, "We would like to sincerely apologize to anyone who might have felt uncomfortable."
